We see it all the time: a new sports ground looks great on day one, but six months later, it’s full of water or the grass is already flat.
Why does this happen? Usually, it’s not because the grass was bad. It’s because the engineering underneath it was old-fashioned.
If you are planning to build a sports facility in 2026, you can’t just roll out a green carpet and hope for the best. You need to know what goes under it. Here is a look at the actual technology we use today to make sure your ground lasts longer than just a few rainy seasons.
Most people focus on the green surface because that’s what players see. But if you ask any turf construction company, they will tell you the real work happens in the base.
In the past, we relied on simple concrete slopes. And the problem is that in a heavy Indian monsoon, water has nowhere to go fast enough.
Now, we use something called vertical drainage. We build a porous base (often using porous asphalt or specialized stone layers) that lets water pass straight through it instantly. It keeps the ground virtually flat, requiring minimal slope compared to older methods- and keeps it dry. This means you don’t have to cancel matches every time it rains, which is a huge deal for your revenue.
This is the biggest concern for many parents and players. They think artificial grass is hard and causes injuries.
To be honest, that used to be true. But modern technology has fixed it with Shock Pads.
This is a foam layer we put under the turf. It works like a cushion. When a player runs or falls, this layer absorbs the shock instead of their knees. With the right sand and rubber infill on top, the surface doesn’t feel stiff anymore it starts feeling a lot closer to natural ground. And if safety matters to you (especially for schools), don’t just look at how the turf looks. Ask for the shock absorption rating first.
Most people who ask about indoor badminton court construction costs are basically stuck on one decision: should they go for wooden flooring, or choose a synthetic (PVC) surface instead?
Here is the simple breakdown:
Wooden Flooring: It looks professional and classic. But wood needs proper care. If humidity isn’t controlled or the polishing gets ignored, the floor can start wearing out much faster than people expect.
Synthetic (PVC) Mats: These have improved a lot. The new ones have a great grip and cushion built in.
The Price Reality: While wood is often more expensive to install, the real difference is in the upkeep. Synthetic courts are almost “install and forget.” You just need to clean them. For a commercial business, this lower maintenance often makes synthetic a smarter financial choice in the long run.
Old artificial grass used to get incredibly hot in the summer, sometimes too hot to play on.
Manufacturers solved this by changing the science of the fiber. Now, we use – IR-Reflective Technology. Unlike older fibers that absorbed heat like a black road, these new fibers are designed to reflect infrared sunlight.
Combined with lighter-colored infills (instead of black rubber), this technology makes a noticeable difference in surface temperature, allowing players to use the ground comfortably even on sunny afternoons.
Space is expensive, especially in cities. This is where the biggest shift in design technology has happened.
Ten years ago, if you wanted a basketball court and a tennis court, you needed two separate spaces. Today, modular interlocking tiles (often made of high-grade Polypropylene) have changed that.
These tiles are engineered to handle different types of ball bounce. You can install a single surface that works perfectly for basketball, volleyball, tennis, and even futsal. The technology lies in the grid pattern-it provides the right friction for sneakers so players don’t slip, but it’s durable enough to handle rain and sun.
For schools and clubs, this is a game-changer. You invest in one piece of land and one installation, but you get a facility that serves five different sports. It doubles the utility of your space without doubling your budget.
Building a sports court is a big investment. Don’t just look for the cheapest quote. Look for the specs. Drainage, shock pads, tile quality – these aren’t small details. These are the things that decide whether your court stays playable for years or starts giving problems after one tough season. If you want something that can handle daily use and Indian weather, the base and engineering matter more than the surface ‘finish’.
At Surekha Exports, this is how we plan every project- we focus on what’s underneath, not just what looks good in photos. We believe in building grounds that perform just as well in year five as they do on day one.
